Main Monuments in Milan
The Dome
The Dome, it’s the symbol of Milan, work started in the year 1386 and the dome was only finished during the 19h century thanks to Napoleon who made himself king of Italy. It is the third largest church in the world after St. Peter’s in Rome and after the Cathedral of Seville. It is overall made of marble, with immense statues, arches, pillars, pinnacles. The statues are about 3500, including the 96 gargoyles.
Palazzo Marino
Palazzo Marino, was named after a person who commissioned its building that started in 1553 and finished in 1558. It was designed by the well-known architect Galeazzo Alessi. Inside the palazzo, which is situated in Piazza della Scala, is full of monuments, statues and paintings, as well as a beautiful inner courtyard. Now Palazzo Marino hosts the Town Hall.
Monumental Cemetery
Monumental Cemetery: Carlo Maciachini built the Monumental Cemetery between 1863 and 1866 at Porta Volta. The numerous monuments are made by a multitude of artists such as Giacomo Manzù, Luca Beltreami, Pietro Cascella, Mosè Bianchi, Francesco Messina, Medardo Rosso, Adolfo Wildt, Vincenzo Vela and Ettore Ximenes.
Royal Castle
Royal Castle, a palace from 1330 – 1336. The stile, the neoclassic one, that one can admire today descends back to the year 1778 when Giuseppe Piermarini transformed it into a residence for the archduke Ferdinando from Austria
Theater La Scala
Theater "La Scala", was constructed by Giuseppe Piermarini between the years 1776 and 1778. It was destroyed during the Second World War but was rebuilt shortly afterwards. The event “Stagione Scaligera” starts on the 7th December every year.
Sforza Castle
Sforza Castle, is one of the symbols of Milan together with the Madonnina and the Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II. Built within ten years between 1358 and 1368 under Galeazzo II Visconti. The Castle was partly destroyed in 1447 because of a decision of the Ambrosia Republic, it was rebuilt during Francesco Sforza’s period. The Castle suffered many adversities until 1880 when the government wanted to destroy it.
Main Museums in Milan
Pinacoteca di Brera
Pinacoteca di Brera, is an art museum in Milan, founded in 1809 by Napoleon I, and one of Italy’s largest art galleries. Its original collection was that of Milan’s Academy of Fine Arts, though its most important works were acquired later. The museum’s holdings consist mainly of Italian paintings from the Quattrocento (15th century) to the Rococo period (18th century). It has especially rich collections of Venetian and Lombard paintings from the Renaissance and Baroque periods.
Leonardo's Last Supper
Leonardo's Last Supper: you will find this great work of art that Leonardo da Vinci was commissioned to paint by Ludovico il Moro, from 1496 to 1498, in the refectory of the Dominican convent of Santa Maria delle Grazie, outside the church a door, on your right, will lead you into it. The Last Supper painted by Leonardo da Vinci is ingeniously devised as an expansion of the perspective of the space in which it is set (1495-1497). It is one of the most famous works of art in the world, and has long been an icon of Western civilization.
The Milan Acquarium
The Milan Aquarium is one of the oldest and largest in Italy. Enormous pools are filled with more than 100 different species of fish, living in recreated environments ranging from the Amazon to the Mediterranean. There's also a terrarium with amphibians. The thematic focus of the pools in the aquarium is weighted towards native Italian fish-life, both marine and freshwater.
The Leonardo Da Vinci Museum of Science and Technology
The Leonardo Da Vinci Museum of Science and Technology, is housed in a former Olivetan monastery. The museum, opened in 1953, illustrates the history of science and technology down to modern times. Of particular interest are the Leonardo da Vinci Gallery; the department of physics, with apparatus used by Galileo, Newton and Volta and the departments of optics, acoustics, telegraphy, transport, shipping, railroads, flying, metallurgy, motor vehicles, clocks and watches, and timber. There is also a library and reading room (film presentations).
The Municipal Archeological Museum
The Municipal Archaeological Museum, was born as the fusion of the Brera Archaeological Museum and the Municipal Artistic Museum. It contains Greek, Italiot and Etruscan bronzes and pottery. One section is dedicated to the Roman Period in Milan. Another section is dedicated to recent excavations, and their relics, made in Palestine. There is also a very interesting ancient coins collection.
